ABSTRACT

In certain registers, German tends to use more nouns than English, a tendency which is called ‘nominalization’ or Nomi-nalstil [noun style]. What most people think of first is probably those over-long compound nouns in German which are the butt of many jokes: they do exist, but mainly only in dry official and formalized language, and they need not concern us here. It is true, though, that compound nouns are often found in Nominalstil, and you will remember them from Day 16 .
