Meanwhile Nicola Sacco was largely confined to his cell, kept strictly apart from other prisoners. Under state law a convicted but unsentenced prisoner was not allowed to work in the prison shop or mix with the others. Vanzetti was more fortunate: convicted and sentenced for the Bridgewater hold-up, he was allowed to work in the paint shop, making out licence plates for cars registered in the state.
