ABSTRACT

The imperative mood is used to express a command: e.g. ‘Come here!’, ‘Put that down!’, ‘Take a seat!’ In German, there are three different forms of the imperative depending on whom the speaker is addressing: i) the informal singular form for a person who would be addressed as du, e.g. Komm her! ii) the informal plural form for people addressed as ihr, e.g. Kommt her! iii) the polite form for people (singular and plural) who would be addressed as Sie, e.g. Nehmen Sie Platz. As our text is aimed at young students, the du-imperative is used rather than the more formal Sie-imperative, and it is written as if talking to one person (hence the singular form).
