ABSTRACT
A reflexive verb is a verb whose direct object is a reflexive pronoun: e.g. Ich wasche mich ‘I wash myself ’. A reflexive pronoun always refers to the same person/thing as the subject (i.e. ‘I’ and ‘myself ’ are the same person). The reflexive pronouns in German are as follows:
sich entscheiden (23-24) ich entscheide mich wir entscheiden uns
‘to decide’ du entscheidest dich ihr entscheidet euch
er/sie/es entscheidet sich sie/Sie entscheiden sich
Reflexive pronouns usually follow the same word order as direct objects: i.e. they most commonly occur immediately after the subject and verb: Das lässt sich (7), ansonsten lohne es sich (17), daher sollte man sich … entscheiden (23-24), für gröβere Trips biete es sich an (38), man muss sich … abschotten (43-44); although sometimes the subject can be moved to later in the sentence, particularly when it is a noun rather than a pronoun: Über den Buddy lassen sich dann auch gut andere Einheimische kennenlernen (15-16).
