There are various ways of negating a sentence in German, the most common being the use of nicht and kein.

22.1a The position of nicht

Most sentences in German are made negative by the use of nicht. The position of nicht can cause problems for English learners, as it very much depends on the nature of the other elements in the sentence. The following rules are given as a rough guide, although they are often broken when a shift of emphasis is required (see 22.3b).
