One might well hope so, but then brainwashing is obviously easier to deal with than language-washing. The efforts of educated British churchmen to launder the Bible (and associated hymns and services) are as drops of water, or simple soapsuds, compared to the homemade efforts of their American brethren. In Britain the changes are essentially motivated, foolish and misguided as they may be, by the fear that the word of God may not be comprehended, grasped, cottoned-on-to. Consequently, plain, drab, understandable words are preferred to beautiful old hard ones. In America the cosmetic enterprise is, inevitably, reinforced by so much ideology and sociology that even theology doesn’t rear its divine head.
