ABSTRACT

We have now reached the point when it is time to pull together the more important observations made in previous chapters and draw the conclusions of this volume. It gives us an opportunity to reflect on both conceptual and substantive issues and in so doing also look to the future: what can we really say about the role of the media in democratization as Africa enters the new century? Given that no systematic study has been conducted on the role of the media in democratization in Africa, we believe that the conclusions drawn here should be of value to students of democratization as well as those who look at this field from a mass communications viewpoint.
