ABSTRACT
This danger is the corollary of the preceding. We have just seen why it is wrong to yoke a society’s understanding of its history tightly to present needs (for legal judgment). So too, it is wrong to address a society’s present problems by exclusive reference to the lessons of its history, that is, to a privileged reading of its past.
