Alittlebeforeeight-o'clockinthemorningonOctober6,1990,the authorsofthispaperjoinedothermembersoftheHomelessAction Committee(HAC)inblockingtheentrancestoamunicipalparkinglot behindKline'sdepartmentstoreindowntownAnnArbor.HAChad chosentheparkinglotasthesiteforanoontimerallyto"SaveAnn ArborHomes,"areferencetothesquattedhouses(originallyopened upbyHAC)adjacenttothelotandnowthreatenedwithdemolition.A successfulrallyrequiredthatweprevent"businessasusual"ona valuableparcelofdowntownrealestate.Asitturnedout,ourblockade oftheparkinglotledtoaconfrontationwithangrymerchantswho triedtohaveusremovedbythepolice.ButHACsuccessfullyshut downthelotandtherallyproceededasplanned.
