ABSTRACT
A week before I left for Thailand I happened to meet one of my former students. We chatted for a while and then she said, “Are you doing anything exciting this Summer?” “Yes,” I replied. “I’m going to Thailand for a few weeks.” Her eyes immediately glazed over and her face lit up. “You are so lucky. I’m crazy about the place,” she said. Then she told me, speaking rapturously, about a trip she had made to Thailand and India a few years earlier.
