Chance is presently Professor and Head of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Connecticut, Storrs. He was formerly Associate Professor and Director of the Program in the Anthropology of Development at McGill University, Montreal. He studied anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania before receiving his Ph.D. degree from Cornell University in 1957. He has held post-doctoral research fellowships from the Russell Sage Foundation, Harvard University, and the Arctic Institute of North America. He is the author of numerous articles and books on the north including The Eskimo of North Alaska.
