Reproduced by permission of the American Anthropological Association from American Anthropologist, Vol. 70, No. 1, 1968. Sydel Silverman was born in Chicago in 1933. She received an M. A. in Human Development from the University of Chicago in 1957 and a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Columbia University in 1963. She joined the Department of Anthropology at Queens College in 1962 and is presently Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department. Mrs. Silverman is primarily interested in peasant society, especially the European Mediterranean. She conducted a community study in the Province of Perugia, Italy in 1960-1961. In 1967 she carried out an exploratory study of a land reform area in Southern Italy. At present she is working on a book on method and the nature of anthropological data.
