Alex Inkeles is Professor of Sociology at Harvard University and Director of Studies on Social and Cultural Aspects of Development at Harvard’s Center for International Affairs. He combines an interest and expertise in the sociology of Soviet society as well as in the developing areas. He holds a B.A. and M. A. from Cornell University and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. As an outgrowth of an intensive program of interviewing refugees from the Soviet Union, Professor Inkeles published several studies: Public Opinion in Soviet Russia, Soviet Citizen, and Soviet Society. Professor Inkeles is currently directing a six-nation study of the sociocultural aspects of economic development. His international interests are combined with a concern for the inter-relations of personality and social structure, and the integration of psychological and sociological theory.
