ABSTRACT

Aristotle's politics made the diversity of regimes of the Greek city-states intelligible; Max Weber's political sociology tries to accomplish the same thing within the context of universal history. Weber's political sociology is related to the historical situation in which he lived, the situation of Germany and of Western society. Weber was a national liberal, but he was not a liberal in the American sense. The economic relates to the satisfaction of needs as the goal determining the rational organization of behavior; the political is characterized by the Herrschaft, or domination exercised by one or more men over other men. According to Weber, bureaucratic domination characterizes all modern societies and constitutes an important sector of any regime, nevertheless the functionary is not cut out to lead the state or to exercise the job of the professional politician. Weber is the last of the social scientists who has had a knowledge of world history.
