ABSTRACT

I wish to reply to Mr. J. C. C. Smart’s cogent reply to my earlier discussion in Ethics concerning extreme and restricted utilitarianism. I wish to coniine my remarks to a discussion of the prisoners’ dilemma and the garden-watering examples, for these, I feel, are at the crux of the apparent remaining disagreement between Mr. Smart and myself, and a discussion may reveal whether this disagreement is fundamental or whether it can be resolved.
