ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the underlying meanings of body manipulation such as tattoos, piercing, and branding. My aim is to explore what I see as the latent significance for youngsters regarding their attraction to the placement and viewing of marks on the skin. This placement, it must be noted in a way that is essential to my argument, can in general only be achieved through the voluntary submission to a painful procedure.
