ABSTRACT

Matthew Nowicki had designed a spectacular arena for the University of North Carolina that was already acclaimed as a monument to American modern architecture before capturing the prestigious commission to design Chandigarh. Most faculty members were practicing architects but Mario Romanach seemed unable to accustom himself to practice in America. Mario's style differed from that kind of derisive criticism. He had asked to design a high-rise building next to the PSFS Building on Market Street. PSFS was a landmark office building designed by George Howe and William Lescaze. Lescaze had come to America from Switzerland and teamed with Howe to design this icon of modernism in Philadelphia. The atrium was open to each floor with a monumental window facing PSFS. One of the most devastating critics was a woman by the name of Stanislawa Nowicki; she was Stasha to all.
