ABSTRACT

Television is a subject about which people have many opinions. It is familiar, popular, and public and easily becomes a topic of controversy. The variety of opinions, as well as the intensity of feeling that often accompanies these attitudes, also derives from a strong tendency to think of television in evaluative, “good or bad” terms. These may refer to its programs and personalities, whether they are liked or disliked, or they may be more general and have to do with whether television is providing the right kind of entertainment or service and whether its effects are beneficial or harmful. Usually they include what the viewer believes is happening to television, and then deal with his feelings about the changes he detects and his criticisms of things to which he is opposed.
