ABSTRACT
The storm and shipwreck that introduce The Tempest deserve intensive analysis. In this brief scene, Shakespeare confronts us with persons from widely separated social classes and places them in an extreme situation which enables him to study their essential characters. The analysis of the scene is presented both as a sample of close textual criticism and as background material helpful to an understanding of sociological implications in the rest of the play.
