ABSTRACT

Premack opened the discussion by questioning Jarvik’s suggestion that nicotine in the blood gets to the amygdala (a positive reinforcing center) and releases norepinephrine that produces the reward or reinforcement; his objection was on the grounds that this facilitating effect, originally found by Stein, depended upon the previous injection of a norepinephrine suppressant. He refused to accept Jarvik’s explanation that this result was due to the fact that the optimal amount was already present.
