ABSTRACT

Science and expertise have been antithetical forms of knowledge in both the ancient and the modern world but they appear identical in today’s postmodern world, not least, as we shall see, in the discipline of science and technology studies (STS). I am a practitioner in this field, which explains my periodic use of “we” in what follows. However, it will be equally clear that I am critical of the field’s tendency to conflate science and expertise, and in the process fail to fulfil the field’s democratic potential.
