ABSTRACT

Kingsley Davis reached the age of sixty-eight in 1976 and was slated to retire from Berkeley. His wife Judith Blake, eighteen years younger than Kingsley planned a move from the Berkeley campus to Los Angeles, specifically to the UCLA. Kingsley Davis, in the fall of 1977, came to the University of Southern California (USC) as Distinguished Professor to the faculty at the USC. At the USC, Kingsley Davis taught his last class in the 1987-1988 academic year but continued as Distinguished Professor of Sociology through the 1990-91 academic year. The chapter reviews the writings of Kingsley Davis from this last period of his career, beginning in 1977. While at the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences, Kingsley accepted an offer from the Hoover Institution of Stanford University to be a senior research fellow beginning with the 1981-1982 academic year.
