ABSTRACT
Egalitarianism in bands is by no means due to a human nature that is so noncompetitive that we are just “naturally” egalitarian. Rather, egalitarianism involves a deep political tension between individuals who are motivated to dominate, and a rank and file that decides it simply will not be dominated.
