ABSTRACT

In August, 1923, Marie and the author, Hripsime, and their two children arrived in America. Leaving behind their sadness at the loss of their native land, they were happy when they arrived at Ellis Island. The authorities refused to allow Hripsime to enter the country. They gave as reasons firstly, that the henna Marie had used on her hair was a sign of some disease, and secondly, that she was two hours past the deadline for entry under her quota. The author's family stayed at Ellis Island about a week. Astor Shamlian's family had already arrived in New York and were living near their son Jack. The author's story is typical of many thousands. Revisionist historians and Philistines may try to deny or distort the truth for reasons of supposed political expediency or economic gain. But authors who lived through those days know the truth and have faith in its ultimate durability.
