ABSTRACT

The vulgar errors often made by writers on racial characteristics of various people become evident when a study is made of the demographic phenomena of Jews. As might be expected, the demographic phenomena were heterogeneous, depending on various social and intellectual factors. Homogeneity of environment produced homogeneity of demographic phenomena. The lack of religious restraint among the Western European Jews is well known. In Eastern Europe and in the Orient they are intensely religious, and as a result marry earlier, and after marriage know little or nothing about keeping their families within "prudent" limits. In Western Europe the social conditions of the Jews are nearer those of the Christians among whom they live, and illegitimacy is more frequent than in the East. The demographic phenomena are very favourable among the Jews, as is attested by investigations of many statisticians. This is to be considered as a characteristic trait of the Semitic race, as against the Aryans, who are less favoured.
