ABSTRACT

In certain countries, the Jews are easily distinguished from the non-Jewish population. This is especially true of Eastern Europe, Russia, Austria, Roumania, and also of certain Oriental countries, like Turkey, Palestine, Persia and the Barbary states. This chapter focuses on the dress and deportment of the Jews in countries where they live in strict isolation from their Christian or Moslem neighbours. Next to dress and deportment the Jew in Eastern Europe has often a peculiar attitude of the body which is distinctly characteristic. The inferior hygienic, economic, and social conditions under which he was compelled to live in the Ghettoes have left their mark on his body. The "Ghetto face" is not the result of the complexion, nor of stature, nor is it due to the size, prominence, or form of the nose, cheek-bones, lips, or chin.
