The world of Saul Bellow’s fiction is wide and deep. At its center stands an active intelligence that surveys the broad currents of twentieth-century social and intellectual history with the express intent of creating order out of chaos. What is apparent in that order is a lucidity of mind and sane moral responsibility that long ago confirmed Bellow’s distinction among contemporary American novelists.
