ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to study the socio-psychological effects on the citizens of Nanjing. The savage cruelty of the Nanjing Massacre was an event seldom seen in human history. Under continuous aerial attacks and constant propaganda from the newspapers about the ability of the Nationalist forces to defend Nanjing, the people who were terrified of the attacks gradually became more calloused. Even before the attack on Nanjing, the Japanese first waged a campaign of fear to try to break down the people's psychological line of defense and destroy their determination to resist. The tragedy brought on by the massacre cannot be expressed in words. And the high-pressured occupation tactics and senseless looting made the people of Nanjing hate the Japanese with a vengeance. As a result, those who suffered the holocaust of the Nanjing Massacre had to bury their sorrow and memories in their hearts.
