ABSTRACT

This chapter tries to answer the complex question of why the transplants chose to locate in the six states in the Midwest corridor. It addresses the question of location choice by comparing each of the states that attracted a transplant with the states that were in the final stage of the selection process. The chapter decides on the characteristics of states that will be used in our comparison of winners and competitors. With that caveat in mind it proceeds to examine winner and competitor states. Each winner state is examined in comparison to the finalist states that were their competitors for transplants. The answer to the question of why the transplants selected the six states in the Midwest corridor is that the Japanese apparently placed great emphasis on the infrastructure of auto suppliers in making their site selection decisions.
