ABSTRACT

Izetbegović asserts that “history is not only the story of incessant changes, but also the perpetual realization of the impossible and unexpected.”

Izetbegović distinguishes between Judaism and Zionism. He praises the period when Jews lived under Islamic rule, but completely negates the Jewish demand for independence and a national status. Thus, Izetbegović accepts the Jews when they are submissive and stateless, and relegated to the status of protected residents (“Demis”) of the Islamic state that he envisions. The demand for independence, and the taking of a stand vis-à-vis the Muslim world, are to be considered unforgivable actions. Izetbegović claims that Jerusalem is not only a Palestinian city, but it is first and foremost a Muslim city. He argues that the Jews are the ones who triggered the conflict with Arab and Muslim regimes, which will fight a continuous war until every centimeter of the conquered land is freed.
