ABSTRACT

The change agent working in another culture stands in a middle position. In a sense he must be a cultural interpreter, understanding not only something of the culture where he is working but also having a fair insight into his own cultural assumptions. Moreover, he must fulfill this need without being a full-time social scientist. His job in fact is much more difficult than that of the research scientist, who is required only to study and analyze the local system. The change agent must do this but he also has to introduce certain foreign innovations into the other system. It cannot be emphasized too often that people are much more willing simply to give information about themselves than to change their habits, the first of which is all the researcher requires but the second of which is needed by the change agent.
