ABSTRACT

Evening Brings Everything Back is a splendid volume generously selecting work from three books by Jaan Kaplinski (b. 1941), an important Estonian poet and essayist. The touching, thought-provoking poems and short prose texts often masterfully reveal the mysteries underlying simple phenomena, both household and natural. Blooming wood sorrel, for example, characteristically induces him to wonder why “something primeval and strange / ...occasionally — but furtively, evasively — / touches you.”
