ABSTRACT
The best-known objects of hermeneutical endeavor in premodern China were the canons of the great religious and philosophical traditions of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. But other traditions, even scientific and technical ones, harbored canons of their own that were also the objects of commentary. One of the most neglected of these, at least among students of Chinese hermeneutics, is that of calendrical astronomy.
