ABSTRACT

The Intermarium has been a staunch defender of Western civilization, since the Mongol invasions of the thirteenth century. Understood as a morally ordered universe of freedom, Western Civilization is only one of several cultures present in the Intermarium. Therefore, for freedom to obtain in the Intermarium, its nations should aim at restoring the spirit of the golden age of the Commonwealth of Poland-Lithuania. It is necessary for the people of the Intermarium to heal themselves from the horrible wounds inflicted on them by the totalitarians. The strategic necessity of a study of the Intermarium, in general, and its most combustive ideological forces, nationalism and (post-) Communism is becoming more apparent over time. Russian National Security Doctrine has portended the reabsorption of these areas into the Russian political space since 1992. For US foreign policy and academia the Intermarium constitutes a serious challenge but also presents potential benefits.
