ABSTRACT
A quarter century ago, Everett Hughes published a volume entitled French Canada in Transition. 1 The book was a landmark. It turned out to be a key element in an immense literature which deals with the industrialization of underdeveloped parts of the world, with the effects of industrialization on multi-ethnic societies, and the consequences of increased specialization within occupations.
