ABSTRACT

Observers of student demonstrations in India over the past fifteen years have been almost inclined to smile at the near-panic of educational authorities, alumni, and social scientists after the student revolt at Berkeley in 1965. For the Berkeley protest would have only been significant in India as one more incident in a long series of demonstrations—often of a very violent nature. 1 In 1963 two Indian newspapers, The Times of India covering the north and The Hindu the south, reported 96 different types of student demonstrations. It has been estimated that there were 261 student walkouts in 1964 and 255 in 1965.
