ABSTRACT

Today was Dragon Festival Day, another important Chinese holiday. The Chinese loved dragons, which were a symbol of virility. All Chinese boys were raised to become dragons. This may explain why so many Chinese girls seemed to prefer Westerners. We were raised to be cowboys, which, to them, were clearly more fun than dragons. Nevertheless, on this day each year everyone in Harbin would get up at dawn and go down to the Songhua River to drink tea and watch the dragon boats race. Then they ate Dragon Food, about which I’ll explain later. Dragon boats were long, traditional wooden dugout canoes, and the races were fun and exciting to watch. This year, the Red Team won. Maybe the Red Team always wins, I don’t know.
