ABSTRACT

Economic dualism, including dual labor market theory, is proving more adept at meeting this exacting standard with every additional publication on the topic. In a market society strangers can engage in commercial intercourse free of the inhibitions of social restraint. Dualism divides firms into two fundamental types, center and periphery. Dualism organizes industries according to their technology, not by the price competitiveness of their participating firms. Clearly theories of dualism are antithetical to the business firm in-terchangeability assumptions of classical and neoclassical theory. Clearly economic dualism is on the upswing in economics after a slow start fostered by a cool mainstream reception. Theories of dualism are based upon a notion of business hierarchy. They will become more compelling to Americans to the extent that Japan and other industrial competitors in the world gain in international trade.
