ABSTRACT
On December 3, 1997, I wrote to the interim dean of the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) of the University of Pennsylvania to tell him that I had decided to retire from my professorship in the Department of Sociology and from my Annenberg Professor of the Social Sciences Chair on June 30, 1998, the end of the 1997-1998 academic year.
