From the very first moments, local investigators, prompted by the FBI, decided that Bari and Cherney had built the bomb themselves. Propelled by certainty, they sought evidence against the couple, interrogating Marr, Kemnitzer, and Cherney and searching Seeds for Peace and Kemnitzer's home. It was as though someone had stepped on an anthill, Kelpie Willsin remembers. By afternoon, right after the bombing, she and Karen Pickett, both Earth First!ers, had converted Pickett's house into a command center. People were scurrying all over the place, and everyone was angry. The FBI came and went. Police ransacked Seeds for Peace. Congressman Ronald Dellums called for an investigation. Reporters interviewed everything that moved. Multimedia efforts attracted and trained volunteers. The team issued a statement of seven goals for Redwood Summer which included resolves to "Save and Protect the Old Growth Ecosystem" and "Acknowledge that the Earth and all species have equal rights.".
