ABSTRACT

African Americans are hit especially hard by this growing poverty. The loss of many of the post-World War II manufacturing jobs that once provided economic stability for black families presents one of the biggest threats to family stability. Anthony King points out that the majority of African American men incarcerated were financially supporting others and were further involved in family work. King suggests the following programs to aid the African American men: culturally appropriate family-support groups, clinical services, community-based family life education programs, family life education programs in correctional institutions, and family case-management services. The thousand-plus papers found may lead one to conclude that, first, research into the impacts of incarceration on African American families must be developed to include more cross-sections of incarcerated populations. Record numbers of women are presently incarcerated, too many of them from the African American community.
