chapter  5
The Dallas Research Setting, Data, Methods
Pages 16

Any attempt to empirically assess the roles played by basic skills, habits, and styles in the determination of schooling outcomes across poverty and ethnic groups makes great demands on data. I was fortunate in having access to the computerized student record database of the Dallas Independent School District (DISD), and in being able to further supplement these data with a questionnaire administered to the teachers of a subset of these students. The resulting database is used in Chapters 5-9 to provide a picture of the determinants of schooling achievement that is unprecedented in detail. This chapter introduces this study by describing the Dallas research setting, the data, and the statistical models and methods used.
