ABSTRACT

John Bowlby introduced attachment theory to the study of mother-infant interaction in a 1958 paper in which he attempted to place certain patterns of the mother-infant behavioural repertoire in an evolutionary perspective. Most of human behaviour is a result of learning, and, at least in the later stages of infancy, maternal attitudes toward offspring vary extensively from one culture to another. Postpartum care included a home visit by a midwife on the day following birth and return visits to The Birth Center (TBC) by the mother and infant on the fifth day and at 2 weeks. Postpartum care included a home visit by a midwife on the day following birth and return visits to TBC by the mother and infant on the fifth day and at 2 weeks. The chapter includes the study of TBC which is located in downtown El Paso in "Segundo Barrio," an area of predominantly lower socioeconomic Hispanic residents.
