ABSTRACT

Why did Yahweh become so jealous of other gods? In this chapter, I answer this question in neurocultural terms, that is, the turn to monotheism was an attempt to condense and consolidate in one unitary cosmopolitical being a plethora of gods. In other words, as bicameral theocentric societies creaked under social pressures and the demands of deities become confusing and contradictory, a more efficient decision-making system was required. Especially when a community is faced with external threats (as the early Israelites were), it is better to have one general in charge than a committee. 1
