ABSTRACT
This is a book about changes and continuities in households, in employment, and in gender differentiation since the 1950s. The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the reader to our topic with a descriptive overview of the postwar trends and patterns. This chapter identifies many of the issues that later chapters will seek to explain in a more analytic fashion, using the framework to be discussed in Chapter 2.
