ABSTRACT

There is no way to prevent massive public anger from boiling over unless we change what we consider the good life. The West has entered an age of austerity that will extend at least until 2020. As a result, the overwhelming majority of the citizens of Europe and the United States will be highly frustrated. There is no way to restore, in the foreseeable future, the Western economies to a level at which they could again provide the kind of rising affluence most Americans and many Europeans have long learned to expect.
