ABSTRACT
No longer merely infirmaries for the shelter of the sick poor, hospitals have become scientific institutions, key instruments in the provision of twentieth-century medical care. Since hospitals have become the definitive place in which modern medical care is given, they have the major responsibility for demonstrating new ways of patient care.
