ABSTRACT

What sort of people are homosexuals? The word conjures up a particular type—the effete, precious-mannered young man with mincing gait and feminine tone of voice. In practice the majority of homosexuals possess no such obvious signs. The affectedly effeminate group is a minority which attracts undue public attention and gives rise to a stereotyped idea of the male homosexual that is about as unfair as the stereotype of the beak-nosed, money-grabbing Jew. Those who imagine that they can invariably pick out ‘one of them’ at a glance are certainly mistaken. Homosexuals are to be found anywhere and everywhere, in all types of occupation and in every social class, but as most of them possess no obvious distinguishing features, either of appearance or manner, the unsophisticated remain in ignorance of their existence.
