ABSTRACT

Of all the brands of psychological theorists the psychoanalysts have most to say about the causes of homosexuality. Their method depends upon making the patient talk about his most intimate fears and fantasies, and in particular encouraging him to recall the emotional reactions of early childhood, since these seem to set the tone for a great deal of what happens later in life. One may well doubt the general validity of some of the interpretations analysts put upon their patients’ musings, but most psychiatrists would agree that the method has proved a very fruitful source of ideas about the origins of abnormal behaviour and that it has greatly increased our understanding of human motives and human vagaries.
