ABSTRACT
Men become embroiled in dangerous competitive interactions far more often than do women. This is a sex difference that we share with other effectively polygynous mammals, and there is no mystery about why this should be so: As we saw in Chapter 7, the sex difference in fitness variance means that mammalian males typically compete for bigger prizes than do females. Bigger prizes warrant bigger gambles.
